"The '101 Contemporary Artists and More...' book series serves as an aesthetic exploration of what contemporary art offers to viewers and how it intertwines with literature. Through this series, our aim is to showcase artists and writers who are actively shaping today's history—individuals worthy of attention, inspiring exploration of the unconventional and unexpected. We aspire to evoke emotions, challenge preconceptions, and provoke introspection, leaving readers and viewers occasionally feeling exposed, vulnerable, yet authentically natural. "
Tough Enough To Care said:
"You may remember that over the past few months, we held an art competition inviting people to express their experiences and perspectives on mental health through any artistic medium. The response was incredible, and we were truly moved by the talent and heartfelt creativity displayed.
We are thrilled to announce the winner: Justin James with his work entitled "Anxiety"!
Here are Justin's words about his powerful and inspiring work:
“I created this painting to reflect the reality of mental health — those days when it feels like we’re on the inside looking out. It’s a perspective many of us know, a sense of disconnection as we watch the world move by. But those moments, as challenging as they can be, are often our mind’s way of telling us to pause, to practice self-compassion, and to focus on what we need to heal.
For me, painting has been a powerful way to express the emotions I carry inside. It became my lifeline during the toughest periods of my life — after enduring a brain injury and later a stroke, both before the age of 49. Art has been my therapy, a way to release feelings I couldn’t always articulate.
This piece is not only a reflection of those struggles but also a gentle reminder: it’s okay to step back, to honour our emotions, and to give ourselves the care and space we need to heal and grow."
A huge thank you to everyone who participated and shared their amazing art. Please keep an eye out on our website where we will be displaying all of the entries. Together, we’re breaking the stigma and opening up conversations about mental health.
